Flood Disaster Relief – Ampara District
Foundation for Social Development (FSD) in partnership with WE CONNECT has launched a flood disaster relief in Ampara district.
Immediate Emergency Needs for the flood affected families were identified by the FSD and WE CONNECT team include:
- Safe drinking water to Maligaikadu and Karaitivu areas.
- Non-food relief items (NFRI) to flood affected families.
A depression in the Bay of Bengal started on 24 November is expected to develop a cyclonic storm by 29 November 2024. This has brought heavy rainfall in the North and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka, caused an unprecedented flash flood in most of the Ampara district (IFRC, 28 Nov).
In Ampara district, 34,885 families are affected. The flood made 27,719 people to evacuate from their houses. Among them, 6,170 people moved to safety centres and 21,549 people were hosted by their relatives. As of 26 November 2024, 70 houses have been identified partially damaged(DMC Sri Lanka, 26 Nov).
There have severe damage reported to many infrastructures such as bridges, roads and farmers have lost their paddy could also lead to severe food insecurity in the coming months.
